Batterers Treatment Program/Domestic Violence Program
Zona Seca has provided its Batterers Treatment Program/Domestic Violence Program for more than 35 years. Services are available in Spanish and English, with attention to cultural values that can affect violence within families. Zona Seca also provides substance-abuse counseling and may supplement classes with therapy when indicated.
Understanding Violence
The current Zona Seca program describes violence as hostility and rage expressed through physical force against people or property. It also references California Penal Code section 1000.6 when describing domestic violence, including intentionally or recklessly causing or attempting bodily injury to a family or household member, or placing that person in reasonable fear of imminent serious bodily injury.
What the Program Includes
- An initial interview
- A minimum of five individual sessions so each client can address personal needs and issues
- Structured weekly support-group sessions based on the required program length
- An exit interview
Clients have opportunities to develop a support system where participants can both give and receive feedback. Program length can range from 12 to 52 weeks depending on the required program.

STOP Domestic Violence
The STOP Domestic Violence curriculum uses psychologically based, client-centered interventions for male domestic-violence offenders. Zona Seca describes the curriculum as having been developed and field-tested over more than 25 years among military and civilian populations internationally.
The 26-week psycho-educational curriculum addresses trauma and domestic violence, survivor guilt, mindfulness and gratitude, intimacy training and, when indicated, a supplementary Level II substance-abuse focus. It incorporates skills practice, exercises, articles, video clips, handouts, homework and other resources.
Trauma & Domestic Violence
Includes interventions focused on the relationship between PTSD and domestic violence.
Survivor Guilt
Examines imaginary crimes, survivor guilt and their relationship to domestic violence.
Hostile Interpretations
Addresses aggressive and criminogenic attitudes and how hostile interpretations can influence behavior.
Guidelines for “Good Men”
Provides a framework for examining personal conduct, responsibility and relationship behavior.
Mindfulness & Gratitude
Uses contemporary approaches intended to generate more positive affect and attitudes, including exercises throughout the sessions.
Intimacy Training
Develops empathy and skills for revealing personal information and includes the Relationship Respect Contract.
The program also uses facilitator materials, participant handouts and homework intended to keep group members actively engaged. Zona Seca notes that video clips and articles support structured discussions, and that substance-abuse treatment can be integrated with domestic-violence treatment when appropriate.
