Rooted in Santa Barbara. Serving Our Community Since 1969.
Zona Seca grew from a community-led effort to expand access to health care and has developed into an organization focused on counseling, intervention, prevention, and safer communities.
Residents from Santa Barbara neighborhoods and UCSB students came together over the lack of available health care services. With support from the Santa Barbara Medical Society, a Community Health Task Force was formed to study East Side health needs and make recommendations to the County Public Health Department.
1970
Becoming a nonprofit
The community collaboration continued, including the reestablishment of the Eastside Neighborhood Clinic at the Franklin Neighborhood Center. In November 1970, the Community Health Task Force became an official California nonprofit corporation.
1972
Expanding prevention and counseling
The organization received major funding from the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism to help develop prevention, intervention, and counseling services for Santa Barbara's Latino community.
1985
Zona Seca, Inc.
At the request of clients in its substance-abuse programs, the organization officially changed its name to Zona Seca, Inc. on July 8, 1985. In Spanish, zona seca means “dry zone.” Its primary focus became reducing substance abuse and helping make Santa Barbara safer for everyone.
Our Mission
Helping Santa Barbara become a safer, drug-free community.
Zona Seca works toward this mission by providing professional and cost-effective substance-abuse counseling, intervention, and prevention services for people in need. The organization believes this work contributes to a safer environment and a better quality of life throughout Santa Barbara.
