Working to Make Our Community a Safer Place for Everyone

Developed in accordance with Santa Barbara County Health Care Services and the Healthy Start Programs, and serving a target population of high risk, 5th and 6th grade, Latino youth living within South Santa Barbara County, the After School Tutoring & Mentoring Program is an after-school prevention initiative at four elementary schools operating five days per week from 2:30 to 5:00 P.M. This program is designed to provide prevention education to high risk 5th and 6th grade students. The program includes Parenting Seminars as a part of the total prevention effort. As a subsidiary of the SANTA BARBARA COMMUNITY PREVENTION COALITION, the After School Tutoring & Mentoring Program reflects the goals of the Coalition:

  • To bring together various prevention efforts

  • To strengthen the whole family through a variety of regular, direct services

  • To support student development

  • To get parents involved.

  • The above goals are truly what the Coalition does best for our community. As a cooperative partner in the Coalition, the After School Program is unique in providing a successful and COMPREHENSIVE program delivered at four neighborhood schools that:

    • Provides students with a safe place after school
    • Promotes academic achievement
    • Develops a child's creativity and sense of identity
    • Promotes social responsibility
    • Helps children deal with feelings
    • Helps children learn how to constructively handle conflict
    • Brings parents together with others for mutual support
    • Provides linkage with existing community resources and educational opportunities
    • Provides individualized case management for families
    • Promotes school-parent connection
    • Develops parenting skills, and
    • Promotes parent leadership
    • Demonstrates its own cost effectiveness
    • Enriches the community!
