Developed in accordance with Santa Barbara County Health Care Services (contact Marge Gordon at 805.681.5445) and the Healthy Start Programs, and serving a target population of high risk, 5th and 6th grade, Latino youth living within South Santa Barbara County, the After School Program is an after school prevention initiative of Tutoring & Mentoring at four elementary schools operating five days per week from 2:30 to 5:00 P.M. This program is designed to provide prevention education to high risk 5th and 6th grade students.

  • Meaningful strategies, which build resiliency in the young people whom theAfter School Programs serve, focus upon the theater arts, dance, story telling, music, drawing, sculpture, parent involvement, education and cultural enrichment. The fifth and sixth grades are an ideal age for prevention of gang aspirations that young people may have. The children we have targeted have multiple risk factors, as specified by Hawkins et al, 1987. Resourcing cultural heritage to build resiliency in today's youth strengthens tomorrow's America.
